Saudi Arabia and Oman Collaborate on Joint Tourist Visa and Initiatives to Boost Tourism Cooperation

Saudi Arabia and Oman’s tourism ministers have announced joint initiatives aimed at attracting tourists and implementing a shared tourist visa. These projects aim to enhance cooperation, stimulate investment, and leverage the natural and cultural diversity of both countries. This article provides a detailed overview of the collaborative efforts between Saudi Arabia and Oman to strengthen their tourism sectors and foster closer ties.

Introduction of a Joint Tourist Visa

Saudi Tourism Minister Ahmad Al Khatib and Omani counterpart Salem Al Mahrooqi have initiated discussions on the introduction of a joint tourist visa during their meeting in Muscat. This joint visa will allow tourists to visit both countries seamlessly, promoting cross-border travel and enhancing the overall tourist experience.

Unified Tourism Initiatives

In an effort to attract foreign tourists as well as citizens and residents of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, Saudi Arabia and Oman have unveiled a range of joint initiatives. These include the launch of a unified tourist visa, seasonal flights, and the establishment of a joint tourism calendar. These measures aim to streamline travel logistics and provide visitors with a comprehensive and well-coordinated tourism experience.

Strengthening Investment Cooperation

The collaborative efforts between Saudi Arabia and Oman also focus on boosting investment cooperation, particularly in the tourism sector. By encouraging investment and providing support to entrepreneurs, both countries aim to capitalize on their tourism potential and attract more private investment. The initiative also emphasizes the importance of enhancing the training of tourism professionals to ensure a high-quality visitor experience.

Abundant Natural and Cultural Diversity

Highlighting the remarkable natural and cultural diversity of both nations, Omani Tourism Minister Al Mahrooqi emphasized that Saudi Arabia and Oman are prominent tourist destinations in the region. The countries boast a wide range of attractions, including historical sites, stunning landscapes, and vibrant cultural experiences. By promoting their unique offerings, Saudi Arabia and Oman aim to attract a greater number of international tourists.

Increasing Tourism Figures

Recent data indicates a significant increase in tourism between Saudi Arabia and Oman. In the first quarter of the year, there was a notable rise in the number of Omani tourists visiting Saudi Arabia, with a 136% increase compared to the previous year. Similarly, the number of tourists from Saudi Arabia visiting Oman increased by 92%. These figures demonstrate the growing interest in travel between the two countries.

Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Collaboration

Both Saudi Arabia and Oman are members of the Gulf Cooperation Council, an organization comprising the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar. The joint efforts between Saudi Arabia and Oman align with the vision of GCC leaders, who approved a strategy for enhancing tourism cooperation in December of the previous year. This collaboration aims to strengthen regional ties and leverage the collective potential of GCC countries to attract visitors from around the world.

Historical Visits and Bilateral Agreements

The collaborative efforts between Saudi Arabia and Oman have been further solidified through historical visits and bilateral agreements. Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman visited Saudi Arabia in July 2021, marking the first visit by an Omani leader in over a decade. During the visit, an agreement was signed to establish a joint council, enabling coordination across various sectors. In return, Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman visited Oman in December 2021, further strengthening bilateral relations.

With the introduction of a shared tourist visa and a range of collaborative initiatives, Saudi Arabia and Oman are focused on enhancing their tourism sectors, attracting more visitors, and deepening the bonds between their nations. These efforts not only promote economic growth but also showcase the rich cultural heritage and natural wonders of both countries. By working together, Saudi Arabia and Oman are well-positioned to cultivate.
